I started a new job as a Network Administrator and have been in front of a computer all day so I haven’t had the desire to sit in front of 1 at home and write. Since I last wrote lots of really messed up things have happened in the US. This has made me think about what is the definition of mentally ill. With all the reading I’ve done I could not find a clear-cut answer. Some people think it’s working a 9 – 5 job. In the 40’s and 50’s you’d get electro shock for having long hair (just think what they’d do to Mikey). Others think it’s when you’re not happy. As my grandma said once, “who said you’re supposed to be happy”. Which is a good point because without the pressure over your head to be happy it makes life easier. Our constitution guarantees the right to the pursuit of happiness but not hap piness. Big difference!
But what makes a person go postal like what happened at VT or what makes a man put his baby in the microwave? No one knows. There is no way of telling who is going to go over the edge. After the fact we can look and say the signs were there and our mental heath system failed us again. Which it did in the case at VT. I wonder how many people show similar signs but never go postal. What’s a person to do when the amount of health care you get depends on the amount and type of insurance you have? The pressures we all feel steer us in 1 direction or the other. When our brain chemistry is off it takes us on trips, which can turn out really bad. We all need to be aware of our surroundings but just because someone is antisocial doesn’t mean they’re dangerous. With over 6 billion people in the world ba d shit is going to happen. We need to find ways to minimize most of it and live with the rest. I do feel the mental heath care system needs to be revamped. Meds may work for some with chemical imbalances and depression but they don’t make your problems go away. People need consoling to be able to cope with today’s reality and should get the care they need. Meds are not only the solution. Even if we were in a Star Trek utopia some people would need help coping and should get the help they need. I guess that's the difference between a Star Trek fantasy and reality.
I think we need to try and live by the golden rule. It is the 1 common thread that runs through all the major religions. It amazes how many religious people don't even think about it. If there is a god you will be judged on how you act and what you did not in which way you prayed.
